How to use
- Fill the tank completely and record the odometer.
- Drive normally until you need to refill.
- Fill up completely again and record both the odometer and the litres.
Formula used
distance = odometer_end − odometer_start
L/100km = (liters / distance) × 100
km/L = distance / litersWorked example
If the start reading is 50,000 km, the end reading is 50,480 km, and 42 litres were filled: distance = 480 km, consumption = (42 / 480) × 100 = 8.75 L/100km, equivalent to 11.43 km/L.
Reading the results
A lower L/100km number means better efficiency. Compare your result with typical figures for your car model to spot mechanical issues or driving-style changes.
FAQ
Why should I measure fuel consumption from two full tanks?▼
Filling to the same point (a full tank) both times ensures the litres you pump the second time closely match what the car actually burned over the distance driven.
What is L/100km and how is it different from km/L?▼
L/100km tells you how many litres are used per 100 kilometres (lower is better); km/L tells you how far you travel on one litre (higher is better). Both are calculated from the same trip data.
How accurate is this calculator?▼
It is as accurate as the odometer and pump readings you enter. Rounding at the pump and mixed driving conditions can introduce small variations.
Can I use this for any type of vehicle?▼
Yes, the formula works for petrol or diesel vehicles as long as you fill the tank completely both times.
How do I use my result with the fuel cost calculator?▼
Take your L/100km result and enter it into our Fuel Cost Calculator along with your typical trip distance to estimate costs.
